Jack’s On Montana To Replace 17th St. Cafe In Santa Monica

What’s the skinny on the new signs and ownership change at the 17th St. Cafe at 1610 Montana Ave. in Santa Monica?  After opening and developing the cafe for 14 years, owner Jack Srebnik sold it in 2003.  Since then, however, the reviews of the Montana Ave. institution have been, well let’s just say less than stellar.  So it appears that Jack is back.  He’s buying it back from the current owners under the auspices of his partnership in Beverly Bagels Inc.  Rather than trying to reconstitute the tainted 17th St. Cafe brand, he is changing the name to Jack’s on Montana.  Expect a menu of brunch, salads, and sandwiches similar to the one that made the cafe a popular breakfast and lunch spot with locals for years.

  1. Was so excited to see the “Jack’s on Montana” sign go up, but it appears not much will change. This place needs a complete and total overhaul from the dated interior to the boring, low quality food, if it ever wants to command the crowds it once enjoyed. What worked in the 90’s does not work today.

Brush up the dining room, burn the old menus, fire the old kitchen staff and find a hip, young, inventive chef who understands today’s farm-to-table scene to completely re-imagine this restaurant.

That is the only way it will survive.

  2. We go to this cafe only because our son likes the pizza.
We live very close so it’s convenient BUT
I agree the food is just OK. We usually go to
A couple other places just down the street.
    Locals know which are better…..

  3. Hello. My networking group had our monthly lunch in your private room on March 12th it was wonderful. But from this day forward we would like a prix fix menu, this will much easier for you and for us.
Can you email me some menu ideas that would include entree, ice tea or soda, tax and tip.
We do have a few vegetarians so please keep that in mind.
    Thanks so much
