Sunnin Lebanese Cafe Exits Santa Monica

I first told you about the expansion of Sunnin Lebanese Cafe into Downtown Santa Monica back in 2015.  Sadly, it appears that the times have gotten the better of them.  All signage has been pulled down and the windows are papered over, a sure indication that they have vacated their location at 525 Santa Monica Blvd. Suite 120.

  1. Sunnin wasn’t very good, or good one day, awful the next when ordering the same item. No consistency. They were consistent in one area, which was overcooking chicken. And a rude owner who makes the customer feel like the bad guy.

    • I disagree. The owner was very nice — she’d hand out free desserts or appetizers, and made a point of remembering your name. And Sunnin is a legend on Westwood Blvd., where they know their Middle Eastern food. The place was really thriving at lunchtime, but trying to pay SM rent with takeout I suspect killed them. Sad that we’ve lost the only decent Lebanese spot in SM.

      • Even before the pandemic rents were impacting restaurant owners in the area. Takeout just can’t pay it sometimes. 😦

      • I’ve eaten at Sunnin in Westwood once (was enough, they overcooked the chicken kabob), and several times at the SM location out of convenience. Somedays was really good but more often than not indifferent cooking, and when I would bring it to the owner’s attention, she put the blame on me for not bringing it back sooner and a new dish could be made…I would tell her how would I know the chicken wouldn’t be overcooked again? She was always on the defensive whenever a comment was made even with politeness and good intentions. Not a nice person and not a good restaurant and not sorry that it closed, except for anyone who worked there that lost their job.
