After what seemed to be a long time coming, Taberna Arros y Vi will officially open today (Wednesday, June 12th) at 5:00pm in the old Tudor House space at 1403 2nd St. in Santa Monica. Brought to you by restaurateur Michael Cardenas (Lazy Ox Canteen), the brand-spanking new venture is billing itself, according to the Facebook page, as a Spanish tapas bar and restaurant. As I reported earlier (toddrickallen.com/tudor-house), after 50 years, Anglophile institution Tudor House, the store, restaurant, tearoom, and bakery at 1403 Second Street in Santa Monica is to close. According to the paper posted on the window, it looks like they now have an official date, Sunday July 22nd. To commemorate the sad news, they will be giving out complimentary glasses of champagne to all customers who come in on Saturday or Sunday of their last weekend to wish them goodbye. Update: EaterLA is reporting that the restaurant moving into the Tudor House space will be a paella and tapas venture by Lazy Ox restaurateur Michael Cardenas. The new restaurant is to be named Taberna Arros y Vi. Read more at: la.eater.com.
Sad but true… Long-standing repository of all things Anglophile, The Tudor House market and tea room will be closing in about 4 weeks. After receiving a tip from a reader about the imminent closure, I talked to an employee who confirmed the tragic news. It seems that after 20 years in the same location at 1403 2nd Street in Santa Monica, and 50 years total, the purveyor of British food and condiments, as well as tea room will be letting their lease expire in about two months. The owners tried valiantly to find a buyer to take over the establishment and preserve it, but none were forthcoming. It looks like a new “Spanish” restaurant will eventually be taking over the space, and employees are fleeing to the new upcoming outpost of The King’s Head in the Valley, Studio City to be exact with a (fingers crossed) opening in June.
