Excited readers have been letting me know that there’s a great new sushi/ramen place open in El Segundo. While I’m a little late in the game in reporting this, Japonica is now open at 229 Main St. Japonica has two other South Bay locations and offers a solid menu of Japanese favorites such as sashimi, tempura, bowls, and rolls.
It appears something new is taking over the Market Pavillion at 1260 Third St. Promenade, last home of the extremely short-lived Kindred Spirit coffee shop. Actually, two new things. The north half is turning into something called Bubbletopia LA. The south half will be Dogbite Gourmet Hot Dogs. Bubbletopia LA will feature milk tea, fruit tea, and waffles with ice cream and various toppings. Dogbite‘s menu offers such things as Chili Dogs, Elote Dogs, and Ring Dogs (bacon-wrapped beef dogs with onion rings, coleslaw, onion, and BBQ sauce), served alongside fries with various toppings. Curiously, I can’t seem to locate much information about these two businesses, so if you know more, let me know…
Ever since longtime El Segundo fixture Main St. Café closed its doors a while back at 450 Main St., I’ve been watching to see what may take a chance on the iconic location. We now have a taker… A new ABC application spills the beans that Tapizon is intent on moving in. Notices in the window promise to connect people with the “abundant health benefits of natural Amazonian ingredients” and to create a Tropi-Cali Lifestyle, which they describe as a “fusing of natural ingredients, authentic settings and original recipes with local flavors and culture”.
It looks like El Segundo is getting a new frozen treat shop. Downtown’s hippest art gallery El Cuervo recently closed at 417 Main St. A new sign in the window lets us know that expanding chain Gelato-Go will soon be delivering artisanal Italian gelato to the good people of El Segundo.
Remember back in January when I first told you about the impending arrival of a cult fave bakery to the space at 225 Main St. in Downtown El Segundo? Well, after what seemed like an eternity, Smallcakes Cupcakery and Creamery throws open their doors for their grand opening at 5pm today, with festivities and freebies the entire weekend. With over 200 locations, and appearances on Cupcake Wars, The View, and in USA Today, the confectionary treat shop is sure to become destination.
I recently spotted an ABC application on an old brick building in Downtown El Segundo, at 130 W. Grand Ave. (corner of Richmond). As it turns out, it looks like this will be a new location for the El Segundo Brewing Company, currently located on Main St. I haven’t confirmed if they will be closing the other location, but this certainly looks like an extensive build-out.
Update: Eater is reporting that the new restaurant will be called The Slice and Pint.
A sign hanging at 225 Main St. in Downtown El Segundo informs us that a branch of the much-lauded Smallcakes Cupcakery and Creamery will soon be opening. With over 200 locations, and appearances on Cupcake Wars, The View, and in USA Today, the sweet shop is sure to bring a lot of attention to the laid-back beach community. Look for a menu of 18 signature cupcake flavors as well as 15 flavors of small batch ice cream made fresh daily.

Manhattan Beach’s popular purveyor of “New Zealand’s coffee culture” is continuing to expand. Signs are up on the space at 321 Main St. in El Segundo that used to be the home of Steve’s Burgers announcing that Two Guns Kitchen will soon be plying the locals and captive industry folks with flat whites. I’m not sure when they will be opening, but it looks like they’re not too far off…
With one location in the Manhattan Village Shopping Center (right behind Macy’s), it looks like Johnny Memphis’ Smokehouse is expanding with another branch in Downtown El Segundo. A banner is up over the old Mandy’s Café space at 241 Main St. announcing the upcoming arrival. No word on when the grills will be fired up, but I’ll keep watching…
