As you can tell if you read this blog, it’s been a hard Summer for restaurants… But seriously, what’s going on in Westwood? A quick jog around the Village left me gobsmacked, with no less that four restaurants recently deceased. Last week I told you about the disappearance of long-standing Westwood anchor Tanino. But add to the list Nushii, Lollicup, and perhaps most surprising, Spireworks. If you recall, Spireworks burst on the scene back in 2016 and caused a stir by introducing The Westside to its signature Turkish döner (spit-roasted meat). I’m not sure why the sudden exodus, but I’ll keep watching.
Hi There! Any idea of what is opening at the old Nawab location???? Thanks Linda
I’m watching… nothing yet.
That’s too bad about Nushii – the owners were really a nice group.
And, Headliners Diner is moving from around the corner into Lollicup (there’s a sign up now).
I think a lot of fast-casual franchise ideas plopped down in Westwood because of the demographics, then find that their concepts are half-baked and can’t take the competition. Grilliant, SpireWorks and Nushii are all examples of places too similar to other nearby eateries. Grilliant was too expensive for the college and lunch crowd, SpireWorks too confusing, and Nushii not unique enough. I went to all those places once, never went back. Look at CAVA – great concept, huge lines every day.
Great insight! Thanks!
FYI, there’s also an alcohol license application now up at the old Grilliant space.
Cava is also former Chipotle executives, so they know what they’re doing. Restaurants have a 90% failure rate in the first five years, so these going out isn’t surprising.
But also, Westwood is not that business friendly.
Can’t argue with your last point. What happened to Sepi’s is a crime. Hopefully, the new North Westwood Neighborhood Council will help the situation.
