La Monique Bringing French Charm To Santa Monica

Santa Monica is getting a gorgeous new dining room… La Monique will open on November 11 and is destined to become a sensation. La Monique has moved into the old Tower 8 restaurant space in the deliciously private and fashionable Hotel Oceana, at 849 Ocean Ave. You may recall Tower 8 opened with a Josiah Citrin menu but eventually closed to the public over a decade ago. The layout has been completely redesigned with a new entrance and the bar moved to the opposite wall. Expect a cozy, chic, elegantly designed space, with a clubby feel and attention to details. The self-described French brasserie (with Italian influence) offers a menu of classics like Le Plateau Royale, steak frites, Dover sole, grilled branzino, escargot poppers, and pastas, as well as Petrossian caviar service and specialty cocktails. I suggest you grab a reservation while you can….

Tower 8 Now Closed To Non-Hotel Guests

Notice a problem with the photo below?  Seems curiously empty, no?  Those who have been enjoying the Josiah Citrin-designed menu at the recently remodeled Tower 8 restaurant in the Oceana Hotel on a quiet residential stretch of Ocean Ave. in Santa Monica might be surprised to learn the next time they come in for a glass of wine and the glorious ocean vistas that they will be politely turned away.  You may recall that the original restaurant in the Oceana (Hideaway) had a residents-only policy at the outset, but after the recent remodeling and reopening as Tower 8 in January of this year, they’ve been allowing walk-ins (Well, actually before the remodel to be precise). However, according to staff, recently the City of Santa Monica demanded that they resubmit for their licenses and stopped them from serving to locals and non-guests of the hotel until such time as the City “got back to them”.  They’ve been in a holding pattern for about two months now with no word from Santa Monica as to when they’ll receive an answer.  So until that time, as apologetic and frustrated as the staff are, there will be no service for walk-ins.  oceanabeachclubhotel

Tower 8, Oceana Beach Club Hotel’s Restaurant Now Open, Menu By Josiah Citrin

A few months ago, I told you about the renovation of Hideaway at the Oceana, the restaurant at the charming and seductive Oceana Beach Club Hotel nestled in a quiet neighborhood at 849 Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica.  While keeping the spectacular views of Palisades Park and the ocean beyond, the plucky little restaurant has replaced its beach club feel with a swanky new look, a new menu, and a new name.  Tower 8 (named after the corresponding lifeguard tower on the beach) is now open with a look that is being described as “70s chic” by staff.  But here’s the biggest surprise: The menu is designed by Josiah Citrin, yes the Josiah Citrin of Mélisse.   The new “California-Coastal” menu features snacks, small plates, plates, sandwiches and panini, salads, and “garnishes” which appear to be side orders such as roasted squash with trumpet mushrooms, pomegranate, rosemary and gigande beans with barley, mushrooms, cippolini onions, roasted grapes. So let’s see… a hip new vibe, breathtaking views, and a menu by Josiah Citrin?  I don’t think Tower 8 is going to be a secret for long.  Read more at: oceanabeachclubhotel.
