It looks like something called D1 Café is coming to the corner two spaces on Kinross and Weyburn Place, next door to Fatburger. The papered over windows indicate the impending arrival of the elusive café, about which I can find little information. But as always, I’ll keep watching the progress.
And while we’re on the subject of new restaurants coming to Westwood… Signs are up on the space that used to house Mongol BBQ at 1064 Gayley Ave. indicating that a new Asian eatery named Northern Café is taking over. I can’t find a great deal of information out there and in a phone call to a similarly named restaurant in Cerritos, a rep denied any connection between the two. (Or at least I think he denied it, the conversation was a bit unclear.) Anyway, the menu posted on the front indicates a varied selection of plates (mapo tofu, orange chicken), noodles (zha jiang, dan dan), fried rice, and handcrafted dumplings (kale and pork, fish and chives).
Back in April of last year, Eater told us about the expansion of DC’s Cava Grill into LA. Well, one branch of the build-as-you-go Greek/Mediterranean restaurant has already opened in The Village at Topanga. But now we know where the second location will be… Westwood (1073 Broxton to be exact). No word on an opening date, but construction is fast and furious.
Right next door to the recently revamped and highly popular Koala Tapioca, a new icy treat shop is coming to the space at 10967 Weyburn Ave. in Westwood. Frostalicious is promising the World’s first self-serve Taiwanese shaved ice machines that will deliver the revolutionary “light as a snowflake, fluffy as a cloud” frozen delights in a myriad of flavors including; strawberry buttermilk, cucumber mint, and creamy mango. And you can add to this an astonishing array of toppings such as; almond tofu, red velvet bites, aloe vera with honey, and flavored condensed milk. Every once in a while, a story surprises me by how much interest it garners. It was back in mid-August that I told you about papers in the window of the old Top N One Ramen Ex space at 1049 Gayley Ave. in Westwood announcing that a new Japanese noodle shop, Musashiya Udon Noodle was moving in. And since then, the buzz on this place has been, well, crazy. So to all those people who have been following this story with cult-like rapt attention comes this exciting news: Musashiya opens today (October 28th) at 11:00am according to the paper in the window. Well first of all, I didn’t even know there was a “Wife Day”, but this is a fairly awesome deal… Tanzy, in the iPic Theater at 10850 Wilshire in Westwood (the old Avco), may have been off your radar, but here’s a great reason to check it out. On Sunday, September 20th, they will be celebrating “Wife Appreciation Day”. By merely uttering the phrase “I appreciate my wife” to your server, you will receive one of the phenomenal Sherry Yard’s (Spago) raspberry soufflé free along with a complimentary glass of Prosecco. Not sure what will happen if both of you are wives, but it could work out well…

After beginning life in a truck, I noticed back in November that popular boba purveyors Koala Tapioca was moving into a brick and mortar at 10965 Weyburn Ave. in Westwood. Well they long since have opened but according to a notice posted on their papered-over window, their popularity is requiring them to close so they can upgrade with a new menu and “enhanced services”. Whatever those enhanced services are, we’ll just have to wait and see but in the meantime, check out more here.
Last November, I told you about the closure of the waffle shop Honeymade at 10912 Le Conte Ave. in Westwood. We now know what will be replacing it. With a smattering of locations across LA and New York, looks like Taiwan-based Coco Fresh Tea & Juice is quickly settling in. I’m not sure when they plan on opening, but it appears that they’re very close. Look for a menu of fruit tea, boba, milk tea, smoothies, and slushes.
