Winston Pies, Planta Cocina Coming To MDR

Thanks to a sharp-eyed reader, I went by the new Boardwalk MDR shopping center at 4625 Admiralty Way in Marina del Rey to see what was going on.  A small notice of nonresponsibility posted on one of the vacant shop fronts spills the beans that mercurial dessert specialist Winston Pies is moving in.  And right next door, in a commodious space in the same shopping center, work is fast and furious on a massive Planta CocinaPlanta Cocina is a concept from the rapidly expanding plant-based eatery Planta with a menu of burritos, tacos, quesadillas, and ensaladas.  (Thanks Trevor!)

Sweet Maple Bringing San Francisco’s Famous Bacon To Santa Monica

The commodious space at 1705 Ocean Ave. In Downtown Santa Monica has hosted a number of different restaurants including (maybe) a Joan’s on Third, H B Daisy, and Winston Pies.  The location has been vacant for a cool minute, but that’s about to change.  Self-described “laid-back and unpretentious neighborhood restaurant, coffeehouse and meeting place” Sweet Maple is moving into the address.  Their website confirms it.  This will be the first SoCal location for the San Francisco-based restaurant famous for their Millionaire’s Bacon, which is “extra-thick, sweet and spicy bacon” that is “slow-cooked for hours with brown sugar and spicy peppers to a chewy perfection”.  Check out the menu of their original branch for an idea of what may be coming.

(Thanks Frank!)

Winston Pies Finds A New Location In Santa Monica

Winston Pies unceremoniously quit the unlucky space at 1705 Ocean Ave., but the plucky pastry purveyor is not done with Santa Monica quite yet.  There’s window paper up on the front of the old Milo SRO space at 826 Pico Blvd. announcing the arrival of the expanding popular bake shop.  Winston produces pies that are handmade from scratch using natural ingredients and baked in the tradition of founder Brianna Abrams’ childhood home of Winston-Salem, NC.  Thanks to PHW for spotting the notices.

Cult Bringing New Life To The Third St. Promenade

I’m quietly optimistic about Downtown Santa Monica.  During the Pandemic, many of the big chain stores and restaurants disappeared overnight.  But there has been a recent uptick in activity, at least as far as restaurants are concerned.  Many new projects are in the works: Trejo’s Tacos, Nick the Greek, Ugo Cafe, SMiZE Cream, Jinky’s Coffee, Winston are all moving in.  And you can add one more name to that list: Practically overnight, a new charming coffee joint set up shop in the former location of Cafe Crepe at 1460 Third St. Promenade.  Cult promises “food.coffee.cocktails” and is on a “mission is to pay homage to the city of Los Angeles, its chefs, dishes, drinks and trends”.  Check out their menu here.  We wish them the best of luck.

Winston Pies Heading To Santa Monica

After having sat vacant for ages, the space at 1705 Ocean Ave. in Santa Monica, previously inhabited by H B Daisy and a dubious branch of Joan’s on Third before that, is about to get a new tenant.  Window dressing has gone up on the commodious corner shop informing us that this will soon be the home of a branch of popular pastry perfectionist Winston Pies.  This will be their third location, we wish them the best of luck.
