Il Romanista Brings LA’s First Pizza Al Taglio To El Segundo

It looks like a new contender is vying for the attention of hungry lunchtime workers in the busy food scene of El Segundo.  Il Romanista recently opened in the space at 829 N. Douglas St. that used to be the home of ZPizza.  The new restaurant claims that it is the first to bring Roman-style pizza al taglio to Los Angeles.  Pizza al taglio is baked in large rectangular pans and cut into squares with large scissors that you can see in the photo below.  Read more about them and check out their menu here.

Samosa House Takes Over The Counter Space In El Segundo

Is competition in the food scene getting too stiff in the El Segundo area?  New multi-use complexes are popping up right and left.  There’s the developing Elevon project, Apollo Landing, and Manhattan Village is getting a much-needed redo.  But there are signs that things are wearing thin.  Many empty spaces still sit in the newish The Point.  And older shopping centers are beginning to bleed tenants.  Plaza El Segundo has had a number of vacant storefronts for a while.  Recently, customized burger joint The Counter pulled up stakes there.  Courageous expanding Indian restaurant chain Samosa House has settled in and is giving it a go, making this their fifth location.  We wish them the best of luck.

Two Guns Kitchen Bringing Flat Whites To El Segundo Soon…

Manhattan Beach’s popular purveyor of “New Zealand’s coffee culture” is continuing to expand.  Signs are up on the space at 321 Main St. in El Segundo that used to be the home of Steve’s Burgers announcing that Two Guns Kitchen will soon be plying the locals and captive industry folks with flat whites.  I’m not sure when they will be opening, but it looks like they’re not too far off…

Ocean Market Grill Expands North

As you know, I’ve been watching the food scene materialize at the Elevon development in El Segundo.  So far, there’s a Bowlology, and upcoming Petros Kafe, and a Lisa’s Café & Bakery.  And now we can add one more to that list.  An ABC license application in the window of the space at 735 N. Douglas St. lets us know that a second location of Long Beach’s Ocean Market Grill will soon be moving in.  It looks like we can expect a menu of tacos, salads, and… fish.

The 2nd Now Open Inside Whole Foods, El Segundo

The popular and always-crowded Whole Foods Market at 760 South Sepulveda Blvd in El Segundo recently opened a new restaurant and bar named The 2nd in a newly constructed space just to your right as you walk in.  On offer here are 36 beers on tap, over 12 wines by the glass, and a creative menu of small plates (such as cauliflower nachos, jackfruit “crab” cakes,  buttermilk marinated calamari), salads, toasts, sushi, various burgers, and desserts (like boozy gelato). There’s also a happy hour from 4pm to 6pm Monday through Friday, and a brunch.  Check out the full menu here.

Lisa’s Café & Bakery Joins The List Of New Eateries In Elevon

Popular caterer and restaurateur Lisa Erikson is expanding her mini empire.  Signs have gone up on the space behind the upcoming Petros Kafe in the enormous Elevon development at 741 N. Douglas St. in El Segundo informing us that a second location of Lisa’s Café & Bakery will be moving in.  No word on an opening date, but I’ll keep my eye on it…

Petros Kafe Expands In El Segundo

I’ve been keeping my eye on the massive Elevon business/retail development, parts of which are still under construction in El Segundo.  In June, Bowlology was the first eatery to open, but since then news has been sparse.  That’s beginning to change. An ABC license application, posted on the front of the empty space at 743 N. Douglas St, Bldg 16, Suite 3, lets us know that the new inhabitant will soon be none other than that fine purveyor of “Hellenic California cuisine” Petros Kafe.  More news to come…

Cozymel’s Gives Up The Ghost In El Segundo

After a 20 year run in El Segundo, iconic Mexican-themed Cozymel’s Coastal Mex has closed its doors at 2171 Rosecrans Ave.  If you find yourself struggling without their much-lauded guacamole, the popular lunch spot has two sister restaurants in Wheaton, Ill. and Westbury, NY. No word on what may be taking over the sizeable and prominent stone building, but I’ll keep my eye on it.

Johnny Memphis’ Smokehouse Expands In El Segundo

With one location in the Manhattan Village Shopping Center (right behind Macy’s), it looks like Johnny Memphis’ Smokehouse is expanding with another branch in Downtown El Segundo.  A banner is up over the old Mandy’s Café space at 241 Main St. announcing the upcoming arrival. No word on when the grills will be fired up, but I’ll keep watching…

The Brewport Market Landing On Main St. In El Segundo Soon

I recently noticed an ABC license application posted in the window of 204 Main St. in El Segundo, just across the street from newish popular Sausal, requesting to sell beer and wine in their “eating place”.  The name listed on the application is The Brewport Market.  I can’t find much information on the new restaurant, but a name on the application gives us a clue that it may have some association with the El Segundo Brewing Company.

The Hummus Republic Opens In El Segundo

The food scene in aerospace-centric El Segundo continues to expand.  It was back in October that I told you about the impending arrival of a branch of mini-chain The Hummus Republic to the space in The Edge complex at 827 N. Douglas St.  You’ll be happy to know that the “build your own” fast/casual Mediterranean grill recently opened.  Read more and check out menus here.

Bowlology Opens In El Segundo, And You’ll Never Guess What’s On The Menu…

It was back in August of last year that I told you about the first listed restaurant going into the giant Elevon complex still in development on the corner of Mariposa and Douglas in El Segundo.  At the time, the paper in the windows indicated that it would be a branch of Bowl of Heaven, the purveyors of all things acai.  However, due to some corporate maneuverings within the parent company, this location at 731 N. Douglas is now independent from the BoH empire and now goes by the name of Bowlology.  It recently opened, and offers what you might guess: juices, smoothies, and acai bowls.  But there’s one big difference:  Yes folks its poke-palooza west of the 405!  Bowlology also offers a selection of prefab poke bowls, and only just a block away from the also recently opened Ono Poke.  Why should anyone have to walk more than a block for poke?

Ono Poke Now Open In El Segundo

As raw fish mania sweeps Western LA, many of you have been carefully following the progress of one poke shop that I first told you about back in May.  Having very quickly refitted the old Salad Creations space at 2259 E Maple Ave. in The Edge at Campus El Segundo, Ono Poke has now thrown open its doors to enthusiastic reviews on Yelp.  When will the poke madness end, you ask?  More to come…

Ono Poke Coming To El Segundo

As poke hysteria grips the Westside, we learn of yet another raw fish establishment vying for a place at the table.  Back in December I told you about the demise of El Segundo’s Salad Creations at 2259 E Maple Ave. in The Edge at Campus El Segundo, next to the giant Elevon complex currently under construction.  Signs have recently gone up on the space indicating that the new tenant will be Ono Poke Hawaiian Poke Bowl.  No word on an opening date, but I’ll keep watching.

Farm Stand Closes In El Segundo: El Gringo Kanteen Moving In…

After 10 years of delivering “urban country” food to the good people of El Segundo, local fave Farm Stand closed its doors recently at their 422 Main St. location.  Wasting no time whatsoever, an ABC license transfer application posted in the window informs us that a new restaurant, El Gringo Kanteen will be taking over the space.  EGK appears to be related to the South Bay chain El Gringo Mexican Restaurant, because the name on the ABC app., William Phillip Graw, makes a showing on their licenses as well.  No word on an opening, but I’ll keep watching…
