The food scene around El Segundo has become quite a mercurial affair, with openings and closings almost daily. The latest change? LA’s only branch of the East Coast chain Salad Creations has permanently closed its doors in The Edge complex as of Friday. One employee told me that keeping it open was simply, “too much work”. No word on a replacement, but I’ll keep watching…
It looks like El Segundo will soon be home to a branch of W XYZ Bar, the signature bar of the Aloft Hotels chain that is currently under construction at 475 N. Sepulveda. Look for a menu of “specialty cocktails”, a “snack-attack” menu, and “sassy dj mixes”. According to the website, the new Aloft El Segundo will be up and running on April 12th, 2016.
Back in early August, I noticed that the new Elevon complex in El Segundo was getting a branch of superfood chain Bowl of Heaven. At the time, I also pointed out that their website indicated that Santa Monica was to land a branch as well. And now we know where… Papers are up in the window of the space at 725 Broadway announcing the upcoming arrival. They’re still in the construction phase so I don’t know when they intend on opening, but until then, you can check out Bowl of Heaven’s menu of acai bowls, smoothies, and juices here.
With all eyes on swankier developments lately (I’m looking at you, The Point), other more plebeian developments are off the radar… except here. One giant multi-use development going into a less glamorous part of El Segundo is the massive Elevon, complete with retail, dining, offices, and hotels. And the area around appears to be benefitting as well. Right next door is another, smaller complex, The Edge, located on the corner of N. Douglas St. and E. Maple Dr. With a couple of outlets across The Valley and one in Downtown LA, it appears that The Hummus Republic is expanding into The Edge complex, right next to Elevon. There has been a lot of news generated by the upscale The Point development that recently opened in rapidly developing El Segundo. Most of the restaurant and food announcements arrived late last year. But it looks like one addition to the food scene has only recently come about. Confectionary magic makers Sugarfina is expanding its mini candy empire with a new boutique in The Point. It looks like they’re aiming for an October opening date so South Bay sweet tooths will simply have to wait until then.
While all eyes have been on the glitzy The Point development in El Segundo with its hipster dining and retail stores that opened last week, I’ve been keeping watch on another massive, yet less glam and more work horse development also coming to El Segundo. Back in February of this year, I told you about the giant multi-use complex Elevon that was in development near the corner of Imperial and Douglas that promised office, retail, and dining space. Still mostly under construction, I’ve been awaiting restaurant announcements. Well ladies and gentlemen we have our first restaurant. Signs have gone up announcing that Bowl of Heaven will soon inhabit one of the spaces. With locations throughout California, BoH offers a menu of acai bowls, smoothies, and juices that you can read more about here. Incidentally, according to the website, looks like Santa Monica can expect a branch soon as well…
There are a great many of you who read this blog that appear to be very excited about the arrival of the big shopping/dining development The Point, situated on the corner of Rosecrans and Sepulveda in El Segundo (Manhattan Beach adjacent). Much of your attention is focused on the True Food Kitchen (that according to their website is now open), but as I’ve told you before, there are many other eateries on the way as well. I can’t exactly say when all of those restaurants will open (although it looks like most will be open very soon), I can tell you that The Point officially opens this Thursday with a 9:30am complimentary continental breakfast followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony and other activities over the weekend that you can read more about here.
Fanaticism-inspiring CA chain In-N-Out Burger continues its slow and steady expansion. The old derelict Sizzler that used to inhabit the corner of Sepulveda and E. Mariposa in El Segundo has been torn down and construction is underway on the building that will house the new restaurant. No word on an opening date, but I’m sure the hungry aerospace crowds are chomping at the bit…
The food scene is really taking off in this neck of the woods lately… A major build-out is underway on the corner space that used to house curry spot Indian Summer at 219 Main St. in El Segundo. According to the ABC application, the eatery will be named Sausal El Segundo and is brought to you by an entity called Soul Sauce Cantina LLC . A still-developing website describes the new restaurant’s menu as “nuevo rancho cuisine” and yes, there will be liquor… No word on an opening date, but it looks like they’ve got a way to go.
Boasting over 40 restaurants in California, Washington, and Illinois, Specialty’s Café & Bakery has recently thrown its hat into the ring of the burgeoning Manhattan Beach/El Segundo food scene by opening a branch at 2101 E. El Segundo Blvd., right on the corner of Continental Blvd. In case you’re unfamiliar, Specialty’s offers a menu of baked items, breakfasts, sandwiches, salads, and soups in a cheery and bright setting that includes a sizable outdoor patio. It appears that Sweet XO, the yogurt, bakery, and gift store that opened a little over a year ago has closed its doors at 3700B Allied Way in Plaza El Segundo, next to The Counter. While the reviews praised their astonishing array of treats like “xogurt” with 175 different toppings, desserts, cupcakes, and candies, it just didn’t prove enough. And if you suddenly find that existence has lost all meaning without their promise of “Life Fulfilled”, you can track down three other locations scattered across SoCal here.
Remember back in January when I told you about the impending arrival of Flights Craft Beers + Sports Grill, the new bar with 40 beers on tap, an interesting menu, and odd location (5119 W. El Segundo Blvd, in Hawthorne)? I’ve been carefully watching this story because the Manhattan Beach/El Segundo food scene is exploding right now and Flights is the farthest east of all of the new upcoming restaurants. Well, after delaying their opening a few weeks, they eventually opened for business on March 25th. Shortly thereafter however, they had to close their doors due to health and safety code violations. A letter pasted under the notice of closure on the front door explains that the moving of an ice machine and installation of a new washing machine required new permits that they simply didn’t know about. But they are planning on reopening as soon as they can.
Please fasten your seatbelt and put your seat in the upright position… Recently, I told you about a new sports bar being built in an unlikely place on the edge of El Segundo. According to their sign, it appears that Flights Craft Beers + Sports Grill will be coming in for a landing on March 12th at 5119 W. El Segundo Blvd (just to the east of the 405). Until then, check out their menu and their selection of 40 beers on tap here.
Update: The opening has been pushed back to March 25th.
Looks like a new office and retail plaza will be opening up soon in El Segundo. And we’re not talking some little strip mall here, but rather a giant 46.5 acre development with its own Hyatt Place Hotel. Named Elevon, it sits near the corner of Imperial and Douglas. While I can’t find out exactly what’s coming, the website boasts 13,500 square feet of dining space. Along with The Point, the booming local aerospace industry will be spoilt for choice. Work is well-underway so expect restaurant announcements soon. In the mean time, check out the artist rendering here, and I’ll keep my eye on it…
I’ve been watching The Point, the upscale outdoor mall being built on the corner of Sepulveda and Rosecrans in Manhattan Beach/El Segundo. After a little bit of investigation back in September, I told you that True Food Kitchen would be moving into the colossal development in 2015. And now comes news, via the LA Times, of the other restaurants that will be on offer: Mendocino Farms, Superba Food & Bread, Shophouse, North Italia (which along with True Food Kitchen is part of the Fox Restaurant Concepts group), and a “restaurant and marketplace” from the founder of Pitfire Artisan Pizza. Look for the openings to begin sometime in 2015.
